Cognitive Behaviour Therapy

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based therapy. It is based on the idea that how we perceive and interpret the events in our lives influences how we feel emotionally and how we respond. CBT helps you to identify and challenge distressing thoughts, images and move towards alternative balanced thoughts and coping behaviours.

CBT is typically a short-term, goal orientated therapy aimed to reduce distress and equip you with a range of skills that you can maintain beyond the ending of therapy.

Useful for : Anxiety, low mood, depression, panic, stress, OCD, PTSD, phobias, sleep difficulties, functional illness, anger difficulties, voice hearing experiences.

Schema Therapy

Schema therapy is an integrative psychotherapy with an evidence base for working with personality and interpersonal/relational difficulties, chronic depression,  and other longer standing individual and couples problems. Schema therapy integrates elements of cognitive therapy, behaviour therapy, psychoanalytic object relations theory, attachment theory and gestalt therapy into one approach to treatment. Schema therapy is particularly useful when an individuals problems did not respond to or they have relapsed after having been through other therapies.

If a person’s basic emotional needs are not adequately met in childhood, then schemas, coping styles, and modes can develop. Some basic needs that have been identified are: secure attachments to others (includes safety, stability, nurturance, acceptance), development of autonomy, competence and sense of identity, freedom to express valid needs and emotions, spontaneity and play and realistic limits and self control.

Useful for: Chronic depression, Complex Trauma, longstanding interpersonal difficulties, unhelpful coping mechanisms.

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) is a type of evidence-based cognitive behavioural therapy. A unique aspect of DBT is its focus on mindfulness and acceptance of an individual's experience. This is often a vital aspect of the therapeutic work allowing a balance to the work needed to change negative or self destructive behaviours. DBT in an individual format may be used to treat emotional distress and self-destructive behaviours. It teaches skills to cope with, and change, unhealthy behaviours including self-harm, alcohol and drug use and other destructive ways of coping with emotional pain.

Useful for: Self-harming, alcohol and drug use, eating disorders, symptoms of PTSD and Complex Trauma including Dissociation.

Compassion Focused Therapy

Compassion Focused Approaches help to cultivate strength and wisdom, along with a caring commitment, to face the challenges and difficulties of life. CFT has been shown to be helpful for people suffering from a variety of difficulties, including depression, anxiety, eating problems, and the impact of trauma. CFT was developed by Professor Paul Gilbert to help people who have difficulties with self-criticism and shame. CFT helps us to realise that much of what causes us to suffer is not our fault. At the same time, CFT helps us take responsibility, in a compassionate way, for what we can change

In CFT, there is a focus on understanding your emotions and motivations with the aim of developing a more compassionate relationship with yourself.

Useful for: Anxiety, Low mood, Depression, Low self esteem, Self-loathing, Anger difficulties, Eating disorders, understanding pain and health related difficulties.

Bespoke Consultancy, Supervision & Training

I have experience in delivering training workshops to professional groups and service-users about a range of topics related to psychological therapy, mental health and emotional well-being. These include topics such as Understanding Emotions, Emotional Coping, Distress Tolerance, Mindfulness, and self-care for professionals not in a specific mental health role. I have undertaken specific training on delivering training to services users with co-production in mind and engaging with experts by experience.

Further to this experience, I also have extensive experience and post-qualification training in providing clinical supervision to a range of professionals at various levels of experience.

Staff Support & Reflective Practice

Reflective practice is the ability to reflect on one's thoughts and actions so as to engage in a process of continuous learning. As part of my NHS experience I have facilitated reflective practice groups for a range of professional within community, acute and inpatient services.

However I am interested in the application of staff support and reflective practice outside of health care. Particularly given the economic uncertainty, engaging in reflective practice within business may help the psychological resilience of your workforce and lead to increased group cohesion in the age of working from home.
